Hearing assessments play a crucial role in identifying and addressing hearing loss, helping individuals maintain their quality of life and overall well-being.

At Nelson Audiology, we are dedicated to providing comprehensive hearing assessments to the Ventura and Ojai communities, ensuring that our patients receive the care they need for optimal hearing health.

In this article, we’ll discuss what to expect during a hearing assessment at Nelson Audiology and how these evaluations contribute to a better understanding of your hearing needs.

The Purpose of a Hearing Assessment

A hearing assessment is designed to evaluate your hearing capabilities, identify any potential issues, and determine the most appropriate course of action to address your specific needs.

Hearing assessments can detect various forms of hearing loss, including conductive, sensorineural, and mixed hearing loss, allowing for more targeted and effective treatment options.

Your Initial Consultation and Case History

The hearing assessment process begins with an initial consultation and review of your case history. Our audiologist will discuss your hearing concerns, medical history, and any previous hearing aid experiences.

This information helps us understand your unique needs and tailor the assessment accordingly.

An Otoscopic Examination

During the otoscopic examination, our audiologist will use an otoscope to examine the outer ear and ear canal visually. This examination allows us to check for any obstructions, such as earwax buildup or foreign objects, and detect any abnormalities in the ear’s structure that may be contributing to hearing loss.

Pure-Tone Audiometry Test

Pure-tone audiometry is a primary component of a hearing assessment. This test measures your hearing sensitivity across various frequencies, helping to identify the type and degree of hearing loss.

During this test, you’ll wear headphones and listen to a series of tones at different volumes and pitches. You’ll indicate when you can hear the tones, and the audiologist will record your responses to create an audiogram, which is a visual representation of your hearing ability.

Comprehensive Assessment

Speech Audiometry Testing

Speech audiometry evaluates your ability to hear and understand speech. This test involves listening to spoken words or sentences at different volumes and in varying levels of background noise.

Your responses will be recorded and used to determine your speech recognition threshold and speech discrimination scores.

The Tympanometry Test

Tympanometry is a test that measures the middle ear’s function, specifically the eardrum and the bones connected to it. The audiologist will place a small probe in your ear, which changes the air pressure in the ear canal and measures the eardrum’s movement.

This test helps identify issues such as middle ear infections, eardrum perforations, or Eustachian tube dysfunction.

Reviewing Your Results and Providing Recommendations

Once the hearing assessment is complete, our audiologist will review the results with you and explain the findings. If any hearing loss is detected, we will discuss the best treatment options, which may include hearing aids, assistive listening devices, or medical interventions.

We will work closely with you to ensure that the chosen solution meets your individual needs and preferences.
