If you or someone you know is suffering from hearing loss, seeking help can be a daunting step to take, especially with so many options available. Knowing the difference between these options and your reasons for needing hearing care plays a huge part in finding the perfect solution for you.

At Nelson Audiology, our goal is for you to know all of your options so that, no matter what your budget or lifestyle, you can make an informed choice.

Factors to Consider

So many factors play a role in finding hearing care that works for you.

Before diving into your options, there are a few considerations you should take into account to help you make a more informed choice.

  • The configuration of your hearing loss and its severity
  • Whether you have an active lifestyle and the environments you spend the most time in
  • Whether you prefer face-to-face or remote support
  • Whether you are looking for premium care or a solution on a budget
  • Whether you want to stick with an independent company for the long term or are happy to work with a corporation and deal with different representatives

Whether you’re looking for a quick solution for mild hearing loss or for longer-term, ongoing care that is tailored to your hearing challenge, Nelson Audiology can help.

Now, let’s take a look at the most common hearing solutions.

What Are Your Options?

Earphones and Cell Phone Apps ($0-$250)

If you have a low (or non-existent) budget, earphones and mobile phone apps can be a good option. Working by simply increasing the volume for mild hearing loss, this option requires basic equipment (a mobile phone and headphones) but will not address any ongoing hearing challenges you may have.

PSAPs (Personal Sound Amplification Products) ($79-$1250)

Another low-investment option, PSAPs are an easily accessible option if you’re looking to simply amplify the sound around you. They do not include a hearing assessment so you will not have any long-term hearing concerns addressed.

Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids ($800-$2500)

FDA-approved hearing aids are a more affordable option for hearing care that you can order online. You will not require any form of testing or fitting and the devices will not be tailored to your hearing challenge.

Online Hearing Aids With Remote Audiological Support ($1850-$2400)

These convenient, easy-to-purchase hearing aids are normally good quality and include a brief online hearing assessment. However, no one assesses your hearing or ears in person, which could lead to hearing aids that aren’t right for your specific hearing loss.

Big-Box Retail Stores ($1250-$4000)

Many people have begun using big-box retail stores such as Sam’s Club or Costco for their hearing health. With in-person screening, fitting, and professional technology available, it’s a good option for those who aren’t looking for ongoing support and don’t need to utilize their insurance.

Audiology Clinic ($2500-$7500)

Working with a local clinic allows you to have a comprehensive hearing assessment, in-person service, and cutting-edge technology that addresses your hearing challenge. You will be offered a range of solutions to work with your lifestyle and a treatment plan to best address your challenge.

Hearing Loss Surgery (Cochlear Implants) ($30,000-$50,000)

Usually reserved for those with severe hearing loss, cochlear implants are fitted inside your cochlea to replace your cochlea’s function. You will require a full evaluation to determine if you are suitable for hearing loss surgery.
